Rumor: Blessed Pedro Calungsod's canonization to get the green light from the Pope

Rumors are now swirling in Facebook and elsewhere that Blessed Pedro Calungsod's canonization has just been approved and that a date for the canonization is about to be set. (Perhaps what is meant is that a second miracle attributed to Blessed Calungsod, the one needed for canonization, has been accepted by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.) Nothing yet on the Vatican website, though.

UPDATE (April 5, 2011): The Holy Father Benedict XVI authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to formally recognize miracles attributed to five candidates for beatification on April 2, 2011. See this for the news report on the official blog of the Vatican Information Service. No miracles were approved for any of the beati, including Blessed Pedro Calungsod.

  1. You're right, Carlos. I asked Msgr. Ildebrando Leyson, rector of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Blessed Pedro Calungsod and vice-postulator of the cause, and he said that it is not true. However, he said that the alleged miracle the postulation presented passed the scrutiny of the Vatican medical experts. It will then be scrutinized by theologians and then cardinals who will confirm the authenticity of the miracle and make a recommendation to the Holy Father for the promulgation of a decree super miro.

Let us continue to pray for the canonization of Blessed Pedro and also for the postulation office: the relator in Rome and the vice postulator as they have a lot of work to do in the coming days, weeks, months, hopefully no longer years.

O God, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, graciously grant the canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod, if it be for the greater glory of your Name and for the good our souls. AMEN.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be.

  2. This shall be a milestone, not only for the Philippine Augustinian province of Sto. Nino de Cebu but for the Filipino people as well. Let's all pray for Bl. Pedro Calungsod's canonisation and may the saint-to-be intercede for us and our nation always.
